We are pleased to announce the winners of Help A Student! Unfortunately, we did not reach our target of $1,000,000 and so we tried to find a balance between helping as many people as possible and providing a significant scholarship amount for the highest rated applicants. Here are the results, as chosen by YOU:
http://www.helpastudent.com/Register
We would like to thank all of our sponsors - without you it would not be possible. Special thanks go to our top three sponsors Global Vancouver, EZ Web Solutions, and clubZone.com, as well as our partner Peer 1 Network.

Here are some numbers:
- $10,312 USD collected
- 362 applications
- 100 students will take the cash
During the next month, up till May 31st, there will be voting only, and no new students will be accepted for $10,312 draw. So ask your friends and family to vote for you and help you win!

The money will be awarded during the first week of June. All the winners will be asked to provide some identification, and to verify they will be enrolled in fulltime school in September. Also, we ask that all winners submit a photo of themselves holding a "Help A Student!" sign.

Scholarships up for grabs on Internet
By JIM MacDONALD
A second-year student at St. Francis Xavier University, Duggan recently started a scholarship open to people entering or attending a post-secondary institution in one of six countries. Scholarship recipients are decided by online voting.
Ms. Duggan said she was motivated to start HelpaStudent.com after...
You can read full article here: http://www.herald.ns.ca/NovaScotia/486845.html
Also there was a small mistake in that article:
"...Funds would be awarded to 25 men and 25 women, with the top-three finishers in each group receiving higher cash awards...."
Instead of "25 men and 25 women", it should actually say "50 men and 50 women"... Making a total of 100 students :)

Spring break and a CBC interview
Tuesday February 28th, 2006
|
I just got back from a trip from my grandmother's and it was fantastic. There's nothing like being spoiled with food (mostly sugar) and attention. I got a call from a woman from CBC radio who would like to know about the site. Hopefully I'll improve my interview skills with her, especially if they put me on air. The only downside to that is hearing your own voice. Have you ever listened to a message you left on someone's answer machine and before you knew who it was you were like "haha who's that idiot leaving a message for you? Hope their friends of your parents..." (just for clarification I do not I think that anyone's parent's friends are idiots) well I hope that doesn't happen this time around, that'd be great. I'm having a relaxing spring break away from exams and meal hall although all my friends' breaks were last week, or the week before...or next week so I have no one to hang out with other than my cats, but no big deal. I let you know how the CBC thing goes over as soon as it happens.

Chronicle Herald Interview
Wednesday February 22nd, 2006
|
I had an interview with a guy from the Chronicle Herald today, I'm pumped that reporters are so nice because I was pretty nervous. I'm not shy by any stretch of the imagination but you know how it is when you're put on the spot to answer questions and I wanted to sound somewhat sophisticated in my answers...not sure if that actually happened but that's why reporters usually have great writing skills :). That article should be coming out in the near future so I'm interested to see what he has to say about the site. What else have I been doing...I just finished midterm exams which are always a hassle because, like most university students, I leave everything to the last minute and I can never figure out what I have been doing the last month and a half instead of all this school work, either way it hasn't been done. It's great to have exams over with because now it's SPRING BREAK and I'll be able to get some publicity and some interviews in and a nice visit with the grandmother and perhaps some relaxation. Hope everyone has a great spring break whenever it may be and keep checking the site for new updates! Oh and if you're going down south for your break I don't want to hear how fabulous it was because it's currently -20 degrees Celsius on the east coast...now that's a vacation.

More variety, more fun!
Wednesday February 8th, 2006
|
We've added more variety to the site. Not only can you edit your profile after submission but you can pretty much write about whatever you want. Embarassing moments, unbelievable experiences, funniest thing that's ever happened to you, etc. It's up to you to catch the attention of viewers and convince them to vote, so mix it up and get those creative juices flowing.

Breaking through the first century
Tuesday January 31st, 2006
|
We now have 100 people participating on the site! It's a big step and there are now students from various universities from all over the continent participating. It's awesome to see how fast the word spreads among different countries. I've been getting emails from people from high school and I think it's great that they have not only taken the time to fill out an application but also to wish me success with the site (thanks guys!). I'm starting to notice that a lot of the stories are getting repetitive, not because of what you're writing, but because I don't think I'm allowing you to be as creative as you could be. I'm looking to add video, maybe a section allowing you to tell your "most embarrassing moment" or "funniest thing that's ever happened to me", basically just a little something to attract more attention to your profile. As well, you should be able to edit your profile just incase you think of something else you may think is important or just a spelling error that has snuck in. Other than some changes to the site, I'm still searching for some donations so if you have any ideas, please feel free to share, I'd love to hear from you!

Slow start to something big
Saturday January 21st, 2006
|
Now that the website is launched, people have really started to take interest. I've heard a lot of optimistic things from students around campus and also friends from all over the country. My big obstacle will be catching sponsor's attention but with the right advertising I think it's possible. The profiles are looking great and I'm really impressed about people's creativity and I know that there is a lot more to come. Remember that this is for you, the students, so try and spread the word either to get people to vote for you or to invite them to make their own profile.

Back to school and ready to launch
Wednesday January 11th, 2006
|
I'm back at school after an awesome and desperately needed Christmas break. The launch date has quickly arrived and I'm pretty excited to see what's going to happen. There has been a lot of editing going on within the website but I think everything seems to have fallen into place quite nicely. I'm hoping people like the idea and take the time to write at least 50 words, I mean the majority of you are probably writing 2000 word essays for some scholarships so why not give it a shot, it's worth a try. If this works out, hopefully we can keep the site up and running for the 2006-2007 school year and out even more of you. After all the brainstorming, website design and editing, the site is almost ready so now it's up to you to fill out your application and win some money!

Santa's coming!
Saturday December 24th, 2005
|
Christmas is finally almost here and after being up until all hours of the morning I'm looking forward to a relaxing day with the family. I did six hours of editing yesterday and when I went to save my work it was no where to be found, yeah I know, real smooth. I was livid, I don't think I've been that stressed in while, I even survived exams without that feeling. After an hour of trying to recover my work I gave up and I re-did the editing. That was a good feeling. The site is really shaping up and the guys have done an incredible job and we're excited to get things rolling, I don't know about them but I'm nervous, anxious and interested to see what's going to happen. It's worth a try anyway, even if we can help one person, that's one person that wouldn't have had help without us. Well I'm off to put out milk and cookies, Merry Christmas Eve!

Christmas break has finally arrived!
Saturday December 17th, 2005
|
Exams are finally over! I'm home for the Christmas break and enjoying my time away from the books already. It's time to buckle down and really put the site into over drive. Things are shaping up nicely and the team seems to be right on schedule, I don't know what I would do without them. The launch date is looking promising and I'm hoping that word spreads fast about the site so that there are a variety of profiles and a large volume of people checking out what we're up to. I've got a lot more work to do so updates will be happening frequently.

Christmas EXAMS
Sunday December 4th, 2005
|
Studying for exams while preparing for the launch of help a student is proving to be easier than I thought. I took a break from the Chemistry books and I'm having a good time writing about what I want to do to help other students. I'm really excited about the launch of the site and I think that this idea will catch student's attention because it's so simple and a fun way to earn a possible $50,000 toward a university education. I'm looking forward to seeing what others have to say about what they are doing to earn money towards their university funding and why they feel they need the money, it should be interesting.

A light bulb comes on...
Saturday November 12th, 2005
|
All right, so it's Saturday night and I'm driving home from a friends place from a get together with some high school friends. A friend that I'm driving home gets on the topic of university tuition and we started to complain about how much we're paying and the things we could be doing if we didn't have to go to school. I think we all do that. So he's talking about how he's working three jobs...yes three...and I'm pretty sure that I'm currently unemployed. Anyway, he's working three jobs to pay for tuition, rent and help support his mom because his father recently became ill. I couldn't believe that he was managing to juggle all of this and do well in school. Needless to say I was impressed but at the same time I'm thinking that there are probably millions of students in situations just like his. I knew that I had to do something to try and help him out. I got home and the wheels started spinning... yes my Saturday nights are that interesting. Scholarships are hard to come by these days and to get a decent one you have to write outrageously long essays, that are probably half made up, and spend weeks on applications. I knew that I couldn't attempt to change the world on my own so on Sunday I called some of my friends from Shad Valley, an academic program I attended in 2003. We threw around some ideas and came up with HelpAStudent.com where we will try and raise one million dollars and award scholarships to the top 100 students. With HelpAStudent.com there are no long essays or applications. Current full-time students and those planning on attending university in the fall 2006 semester are going to be able to apply. Students will be required to create an eye-catching profile with a short essay and a picture. They can then send the website to their friends and family to vote for their profile and whoever has the highest rated profile will win the scholarship. I've already started the text on the website and the boys are hard at work doing the programming and web site design. We're planning to launch on January 16th, 2006 so stay tuned for recent updates on what were up to.
